Study Abroad
There are many opportunities to study abroad as an NSBH major. Our majors have gone all over the world! Here is a link to some information about the many study abroad options that have worked for previous NSBH students. In addition to all those programs, we also have one NSBH-specific study abroad program, the NSBH in London summer program.
London Summer: Neuroscience and Behavior
2027 Program Dates: May 17 - June 26, 2027 (Applications due by November 15, 2026)
If you are a Neuroscience and Behavior major, we offer study abroad programs that support your major. You will earn six NSBH elective credits, one of which double-counts as a Liberal Arts 6 requirement. This opportunity is open to all NSBH majors. For more information, visit the study abroad website. This London-based, 6-week, 6-credit, faculty-led summer program will connect Notre Dame Neuroscience and Behavior students with the history and research of neuroscience in England. The 2027 program will be led by Professor Nancy Michael and Barbara Calhoun. In Professor Michael’s course “Sex Differences and the Brain”, you gain an understanding of the sex differences in the brain and behavior and the role that steroid hormones and receptors play in mediating these differences. In Professor Calhoun’s course “Neurodegenerative Disorders and Patient Advocacy in the UK”, you will learn the molecular, genetic, and clinical mechanisms underlying progressive neurological disorders and engage with patient advocacy through an immersive UK lens. Both courses count as electives for the NSBH major. Throughout the trip, we will take excursions to visit sites associated with the culture of London, the study of the brain, the process of disease research, and the championing of patient-centered care in the UK.
Courses
The overall learning objective of this summer study abroad program is to apply concepts of science and health to human experience. We accomplish this goal through the two courses, for a total of 6 credit hours that can count towards upper-level Neuroscience and Behavior credit.
Both courses can count towards upper-level Neuroscience and Behavior credit.
Dr. Michael will teach "NSBH44200: Sex Differences and the Brain” (3 credits). This course will cover the neuroendocrinology underlying sex differences in the brain and behavior.
Professor Calhoun will teach "BIOS42450: Neurodegenerative Disorders and Patient Advocacy in the UK" (3 credits). This course will explore how biomedical research, clinical research, clinical care and regulation, and clinical care operate in a UK context. Both courses count as NSBH electives, and the Patient Advocacy course also counts as an elective for the Compassionate Care in Medicine.
Program Eligibility
All students should be in good academic and disciplinary standing
Students interested in applying for this program should be independent and possess exceptional motivation, emotional maturity, and a high aptitude for adapting to new environments
Open to rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
Encouraged to have taken Neuroscience and Behavior (SC/NSBH20450) OR Human Physiology (BIOS30344) by the time you participate in the program. If you have not yet taken one of these classes, please still apply, and we will evaluate student preparedness on a case-by-case basis.
